Frequently Asked Questions About Invisible Aligners

As an alternative to traditional braces, invisible aligners can be a blessing for many who don’t like the idea of invasive dental treatment. But for those people who don’t know much about invisible aligners or wonder if it’s for them, these frequently asked questions should give you an insight into the invisible aligners.

What are the benefits?

Because invisible aligners are almost invisible nobody notices that you are wearing them. Unlike traditional braces, there are no wires or metal brackets so you can feel much more comfortable as many people can feel self-conscious with traditional braces.

Is the treatment painful?

Some people may experience discomfort for a few days after a new treatment but this is completely normal. It is described as a feeling of pressure but this indicates invisible aligners are working.

How long does the treatment last?

It depends on the individual. It could last up to 11 months depending on the severity of the issue.

How often should I change my aligners?

It is recommended that you wear each set for two weeks.

How do I look after my aligners?

It’s important to look after them as you would look after your own teeth. You can wash and clean them by putting them into tap water and lightly using your toothbrush to clean them.

Can I eat and drink when wearing my aligners?

It is not recommended because any food can damage the aligners. Be sure to take it out before having any meal. It is important to wear your aligners for up to 22 hours a day which allows you plenty of time to eat food safely without wearing them and potentially causing damage.

When else should I not wear my aligners?

You can wear your aligners through almost any activity such as playing a musical instrument but if there are circumstances where you could come into contact with someone else, such as high impact sports, you should take them out. If you risk damaging your aligners it is important to reach out to your smile specialist straight away or email as soon as possible.

Do I need to have an aligner for both sets of teeth?

It is not necessary but as we require the impressions of both the top and bottom sets of teeth it is recommended to have both so you have an aligned bite when you finish your treatment. As the price is the same for both sets of treatment it will be a better option for you to have straight teeth at the end of the treatment.

My cousin got invisible braces and she loves them, she just said the only thing is she has to wear them for many hours of the day and of course all night, but to me it’s worth it – ANYTHING is worth not having metal glued to your teeth. Been there, done that.

I got a huge gap in between my front teeth.. I NEED THIS so bad. I have traumatic experienced from getting braces when I was 11. Unfortunately I didn’t wear my retainer very long so I got this huge gap now. Never would get metal braces again though.

What’s the shortest amount of time you can wear these (if your issue isn’t severe)? I had small gaps in between a few teeth on the top. Other than that, I wouldn’t want to do much to the bottom teeth.

Yup, discomfort is a good thing, means they are doing their job! I love my clear braces… I’m looking for my hubs to get some now… he was amazed how good mine looked.

What about seltzer/sparkling water? Can I drink that when I have them in or will that erode the plastic on the aligners?

  • Barb

Wow so you can just do the top teeth if needed? But you have to do impressions for top and bottom regardless, right?
